Finally, even those who live in the city no longer have to give up the dream of having their own vegetable garden. Thanks to this simple guide you will be able to build a vertical garden through the use of pallets.
Pallet, the supporting structure
The first thing to do is obtain the pallet, the wooden platform that will act as a load-bearing structure for the creation of the vertical vegetable garden. The warehouses and supermarkets are full of them since the platforms serve as pallets for the storage and transport of goods.
Once their function is carried out, the pallets are trashed and it is easy to find many outside the commercial places. The important thing is to choose axes in good condition and transversal so that there is not too much space between them.
Sand and paint the work area
At this point, you need to transform your pallets to make them suitable for the purpose. The first thing to do is to stand the boards so as to eliminate any splinters of wood present. Once the surface is smooth, pass the impregnating agent. Two hands will be more than enough to protect the boards from the weather as the vertical vegetable garden will be installed outside your home. Let the pallets dry and then proceed with painting. The choice of color is personal but the blackboard effect black is widely used given the contrast it creates with the green color of the aromatic herbs from the garden.
Create the bags for your herbs
At this point, it will be necessary to fill the space between one axis and the other with bags. They will contain the seedlings that you decide to grow in the vertical vegetable garden. So, get a black mulch sheet that allows perspiration and water flow. The dimensions must be sufficient to be able to derive as many rectangles as there are plants you want to grow. A valid alternative to the sheet is represented by jute or plastic bags. Place each rectangle of cloth on the pallets, creating pockets between the axes and fixed with a stapler. If the sheet exceeds, cut the leftover with a pair of scissors.
The soil to create the vertical vegetable garden
The last step is to choose and position the soil. The latter is easily purchased in nurseries and in any plant shop but the important thing is that it is suitable for growing horticultural plants such as tomatoes, salad or aromatic plants. So, once you have a good quality soil, pour it into the bags created with the sheet and compact it by pressing with your hands. Then, plant the seeds of your herbs and you’re done.
Finally, hang your garden on the wall or railing, taking care to write the name of each plant under the corresponding bag, directly on the axis that supports it.
