$450,000 Awarded to Vermont Wood Product Organizations The Vermont Council on Rural Development (VCRD) announced on November 27, 2006 that a second year of funding under a $1,000,000 Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant will be awarded to the Vermont Wood Manufacturers Association (VWMA) and the Vermont Wood Products Marketing Council (VWPMC). 2007 funds, totaling $450,000 were awarded to the two organizations that received funds in the first round, in a contract renewal that will build upon a strong portfolio of projects developed in 2006, and provide additional innovative components for the current year. VWMA and VWPMC have worked to develop strong partnerships with Vermont businesses and organizations, including Cabot Creamery and the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing. These collaborations leveraged grant funds to create exceptional opportunities for Vermont’s value added wood industry. The EDA grant funds helped promote the Vermont Brand, develop an Essential Buyers Guide for wood products web portal in cooperation with Cabot Creamery, construct a Vermont Pavilion at regional and national trade shows, produce a new Woodshop and Forest Tours guide, host a Fine Furniture and Wood Products Festival and Design Competition, publish resources for professionals and consumers, and display wood products in venues across the state. Other new ventures for 2007 include participation in the prestigious Architectural Digest Home Show in New York City, themed events and woodworking demonstrations, opportunities for expansion into the ‘Green Building’ industry, and premiere showcase events. VWPMC Background In December 2002, the Vermont Department of Economic Development formed a Vermont Wood Products Marketing Council. Members of the industry and representatives of several industry trade associations were appointed to serve on the Council by the Department. In July 2003, the Council incorporated as a Vermont non-profit; and in December 2003, the Council ratified bylaws. The Council's role is to help guide the development and use of the Vermont wood brand and to plan and implement related awareness building activities with the public and the industry.
